The Pedro Dredge-which was used to mill gold on lower Chicken Creek from 1959 to 1967-is situated at the Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost in Chicken. Established in 1886 as a gold mining town, Chicken is located approximately 128 kilometres northeast of Tok, Alaska, along the Taylor Highway. In 2006, the dredge was added to the National Register of Historic Places and was opened to the public.If the name of the town isn’t enough to make you think twice about stopping, the attractions in Chicken, Alaska, surely will. In 1998, the 500 ton dredge was moved overland to its current location at the Chicken Gold Camp. The dredge commenced operations on lower Chicken Creek in September and worked for approximately five months every year thereafter until October 1967, when it produced its final cleanup. The following year it was disassembled, trucked to Chicken, Alaska and reassembled. It was assembled there, and operated until 1958.
